Are nuts healthy?

Healthy means above all a balanced and needs-based diet. Eating nuts can help you meet your recommended daily nutrient intake. Some types of nuts are high in protein. Many types of nuts are also rich in unsaturated fatty acids. But which nut is (particularly) good for what?

Source of protein

Our almonds are a real protein source. Proteins contribute to maintaining and increasing muscle mass as well as supporting healthy bone structure.

High content of unsaturated fatty acids

Nuts generally contain a lot of fat, that’s undeniable. However, many types of nuts also contain a high proportion of unsaturated fatty acids. Walnuts and pistachios, among several other nuts, contain high amounts of unsaturated fats. Replacing saturated fats with mono- and/or polyunsaturated fats in the diet helps to maintain normal blood cholesterol levels.

Chopping nuts made easy

Some recipes require chopped nuts. You can buy walnut pieces or cashew pieces from us. If you need other nuts for your recipe, you can easily chop them yourself. With a high-performance blender or a food processor, you can crush the nuts in no time. If you don’t have either, you can put the nuts in a bag and hit them with a hammer or a heavy object until your frustrations are gone and the nuts are ground. Rolling a bottle over them works too and is also less noisy.

Activating nuts — a recent trend

You may have been told to soak nuts in water to improve their digestibility and remove anti-nutrients like enzyme inhibitors, lectins, and phytic acid. While this might work with some legumes, there is no scientific evidence for this with nuts. We therefore recommend eating nuts as they taste best: fresh from the pack.

Roasting nuts in the oven or in a pan

You can briefly toss nuts and seeds in a hot pan without oil to bring out their flavour even more. You can also roast your nuts in the oven. This works particularly well with pine nuts or hazelnuts. To do this, spread the nuts out on a baking sheet and roast them at around 170°C (338°F) for about 5-10 minutes, shaking them gently now and then. However, you should be careful here: The small seeds can burn quickly.

Which nuts are highest in protein?

Peanuts are ahead when it comes to protein content. You can buy our peanuts in a 1kg pack. They contain about 24g of protein per 100g. This makes them a real power snack – ideal after a workout, for example. Almonds and pistachios are also great sources of protein.

Which nuts are suitable for a low-carb diet?

For a low-carb diet, almonds, pecans, or macadamias are a good choice, as they contain only a few carbohydrates. Cashews, on the other hand, have a relatively high carbohydrate content compared to other nuts.

How can I store nuts?

In order for nuts to stay fresh for as long as possible, it’s best to store them in an airtight container in a cool, dry place. We recommend using our Ball mason jars! This way they keep their crunchiness and don’t lose any flavour. If you want to store nuts for a particularly long time, you can also keep them in the refrigerator or even freeze them. This is especially recommended for nuts with a high fat content such as walnuts or pine nuts, as they can become rancid faster than others.
