Natural colorant spirulina

With KoRo you will experience a blue miracle! Thanks to the tasteless spirulina powder, you can color your dishes blue and create a very special effect. Here we tell you what spirulina actually is and in which dishes it is particularly effective.

Natural colorant spirulina

What is spirulina?

Spirulina, also known as Arthrospira platensis, is a tiny blue-green freshwater microalgae found in the alkaline waters of Mexico, Asia and South America. The algae originated around 3.5 billion years ago and is one of the oldest organisms in the world. Spirulina has a long tradition as a food and was once harvested by the Aztecs from Lake Texcoco, which is now almost dried up in the valley of present-day Mexico City.

The Aztecs already appreciated the diverse microalgae back then: They incorporated the dried spirulina algae into soups and cakes.

Our dried spirulina powder is extracted from the blue-green microalgae. After harvesting, the freshwater algae are dried and ground into powder. It is high in protein with 45 g protein per 100 g and is also vegan. But note: You should not heat your dishes with blue spirulina powder above 70 degrees, because then the color loses its glow.

If you don't like the blue color or are looking for a higher protein source: With a whopping 62 g of protein per 100 g, you can add even more protein to your diet with our green organic spirulina powder.

KoRo tip: In addition to spirulina, there is also the freshwater algae chlorella, which is often used as a dietary supplement. For example in our organic chlorella tablets.

Recipe ideas with blue spirulina powder

Keep in mind that liquids or light-coloured base products are particularly suitable for coloring so that the color is absorbed as well as possible.

Mermaid smoothie bowl

Ingredients:

Put everything in the blender, puree and then garnish as desired, e.g. with organic coconut chips with no added sugar, organic chia seeds and puffed organic pineapple chunks. Tip: If you cut the bananas into pieces beforehand and place them in the freezer for four hours, you can conjure up delicious nice cream (vegan ice cream based on frozen bananas) from the recipe.

Blue Lagoon Shake

Blend all ingredients and serve in a tall glass.

Spirulina latte

Ingredients:

Heat the coconut milk with the ginger in a pan. Then stir in 1 teaspoon of lemon juice and 1 teaspoon of agave syrup and gradually add ½ teaspoon of blue spirulina powder.

Enjoy!

Can you be a foodie even if you only know how to cook a handful of dishes? The answer: of course! Denise suffers from (self-diagnosed) Food Obsession Syndrome. Whether it's veggie curry, sticky tofu, spinach and feta risotto or caprese wraps – if she likes something, she likes to have the ingredients in her fridge. The junior content manager is always curious and loves delving into KoRo's diverse product range to write playful product descriptions or come up with exciting topics for the KoRo blog.

Outside of KoRo, Denise has a bachelor's degree in Fashion Journalism & Communication. However, fashion wasn't really her thing, and she quickly moved to food. One constant in her life: an incredible passion for writing! When she's not filling up her notebook, she's wandering around supermarkets (a little longer than ‘necessary’), sipping coffee, losing herself in books, crocheting or rummaging through Berlin's second-hand shops.
