The spice to impress (or shock) your friends

Did you know that chilies are botanically classified as berries? At first glance, a chili pepper doesn't look much like the round, small fruits we all love. However, many nightshades are in fact, botanically speaking, berries – such as peppers and tomatoes too! The chili owes its berry status to the seeds it has inside, and the spiciness of the chilies does not come from the seeds itself, but from the capsaicin contained in the membranes between them. When you eat the chili flakes or season your food with them, the capsaicin comes into contact with the taste buds and nerve receptors in your mouth and on your tongue, where it binds to certain receptors and triggers the familiar burning, sharp feeling.
